6th General Assembly

Legal

Topic: Questioning the addition of legal provisions to the Convention on the Law of the Sea to address disputed economic maritime boundaries.

Topic Brief
The critical and increasingly important laws of the sea are an area of constant disrepute. Disputes over maritime boundaries seem to be escalating in recent times. Various countries are claiming territorial rights, with some countries having announced they are willing to set
up military forces to protect their interests in various areas. Other counties have expressed their concern over such interests and actions, whilst some countries feel more than ever they need to be stating their sovereignty. Fierce negations are to be expected in the 6th GA due to such competing claims. Is it possible to address such a highly contentious issue with additional legal provisions?

What is the Sixth General Assembly?
The 6th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) is a subsidiary committee of the UN General Assembly that deals with issues of international law. The Assembly can address matters ranging from international trade, the conduct of UN personnel, to transnational terrorism, and is tasked to encourage the codification and progressive development of international law. Notable treaties created through this Assembly include the 1998 Rome Statues of the International Criminal Court, and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

In reality, all member States of the United Nations can represent themselves in the Sixth General Assembly. However, for the purposes of this Conference, representation shall be limited to 40 States.
